General Motors will continue building its Chevrolet Impala midsize sedan and Cadillac CT6 luxury sedan at the Detroit/Hamtramck Assembly plant until January, the automaker announced.

At that time, production of the passenger cars will cease, as part of GM's move to streamline its car lineup in the face of declining consumer demand and a shift in the market to SUVs and trucks. GM had previously said it would cease production of the vehicles in June. The Impala sedans will be allocated to retail purchasers, said Rita Kass-Shamoun, a GM Fleet spokesperson.

In November, GM announced it would discontinue six cars by the end of 2019, including the Impala, CT6, Chevrolet Volt, Chevrolet Cruze, Buick LaCrosse, and Cadillac XTS. In April, GM said it would refresh the Chevrolet Malibu and Spark, and discontinue the Sonic.

The Malibu has been a more popular sedan for commercial fleets in earlier years. In 2013, fleets added 7,381 Malibu sedans and 5,233 Impala sedans to commercial fleets, according to the most recent Automotive Fleet data.
