Hawaii lawmakers are considering raising car rental fees to help balance the state's projected $1.3 billion projected two-year budget deficit, reports the Associated Press.

Car rental fees could increase from $3 to $7.50 per day, according to the AP report, which would raise $61 million.

Other pending tax measures include eliminating business exemptions and taking hotel tax money that was distributed to the counties. Airlines, subcontractors and sub lessors would also have to pay a general excise tax, bringing in about $200 million a year to the state.

Smaller pending tax measures would increase taxes on alcohol, tobacco, timeshares, stock options and more.

If all bills pass, these measures combined should net the state about $400 million in new revenue in the next fiscal year.  

The AP report did not include a timetable or mention specific proposed legislation.
