Renters planning to drive out of Florida this spring will see significant savings, with rates as low as $1 per day, with Hertz's Florida "Drive Out" Program available for rental pickup March 24 through June 30, 2008.

The promotion offers some low one-way rates from Florida north and west. Customers can pick up their cars at an airport Hertz office in Ft Lauderdale, Ft. Myers, Jacksonville, Miami, Orlando, Tampa or West Palm Beach. Drive it up to 14 days, and then return it at any of more than 75 major airport and downtown Hertz offices.

Rentals are available on either a daily or weekly basis, for a maximum of two weeks. Daily rates -- for rentals up to four days -- start at $1 a day for an economy reserved in January, $2 a day when reserved in February or $3 a day when reserved in March. Rates for other models, regardless of when you reserve, range from $4.99 a day for a compact to $39.99 a day for a seven-passenger SUV. Weekly rates start at $9.99 for an economy car and range up to $199.99 for the big SUV. Beyond the economy car, the best deals are on intermediate ($9.99/$59.99), standard ($12.99/$77.99) and full-size ($14.99/$79.99) models.

Because Florida pickups are limited to airport locations, customer won’t be able to escape whatever local airport fees may apply, and you'll also face Florida's list of state fees and taxes.

As of early January, Hertz was the only rental company offering the one-way deal this year. Last year, however, Avis and Budget announced similar deals about a month after the Hertz announcement.
