Hyundai Motor Co. has issued a recall of approximately 883,000 Sonata sedans due to a transmission-shift cable that may detach from the shift lever pin.
If the transmission-shift cable detaches, the transmission gear selection may not match the indicated gear. This could lead to a vehicle moving in an unintended direction, increasing the risk of a crash, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

When the driver parks the vehicle and selects the “park” position, the transmission may not be in “park,” which means the parking brake wouldn’t be applied. This could lead to a risk of the vehicle rolling away, says the NHTSA.
The recall affects certain Sonata vehicles from model years 2011-2014 that were sold in the United States and Puerto Rico. Hyundai has identified 1,171 warranty claims and seven reports related to this issue, according to NHTSA documents.
Hyundai will notify all owners of these Sonata sedans, and dealers will repair the connection between the shift cable and shift lever — if necessary — at no cost.
