Maryland Proposal Aims to Decrease Number of Unpaid Tolls
A proposal was introduced in Maryland that would allow the Maryland Transportation Authority to give drivers a 30-day period to pay their toll or receive a $50 citation. The Authority said it is working with rental car companies to come up with a solution for unpaid tolls accrued by their customers.
A new proposal was introduced in Maryland to the General Assembly to allow the Maryland Transportation Authority (MTA) to collect unpaid tolls, according to wtop.com on Jan. 14.
The Washington Post reported last year that nearly 650,000 vehicles owe $6.7 million in unpaid tolls since 2007. Rental car companies are responsible for a majority of unpaid tolls with nine rental car companies owing between $80,000 and $209,000 each.
The wtop.com news site said that the MTA is working with the companies to the solve the problem.
MTA Executive Secretary Harold M. Bartlett said that in the proposal drivers will have 30 days to pay the toll and if it is still unpaid at the end of the 30 days, drivers will receive a $50 citation and possibly a suspension of their registration.
