Tampa International Airport’s new 2.6-million-square-foot consolidated rental car facility already has nine rental car companies signed up before the project has even broken ground, according to a report by the Tampa Bay Times.
The nine rental companies that have signed agreements represent 16 different car rental brands. The contracts still need to be approved by the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority on June 4, according to the report.
Planned to open in two years, Tampa International Airport’s consolidated rental facility will be 300,000 square feet bigger than airport officials originally intended. The airport added space to fit the Tampa car rental market and give it enough space to handle 10 years of projected growth, according to the report.
The new facility is projected to generate an additional $8 million annually for the airport, officials told the Times. Current agreements with rental car agencies bring in a minimum of $23.1 million a year, but under new contracts, it is expected to rise to $31 million.
