New York Gov. Andre Cuomo is backing a 5% added tax to car rentals across the state, according to the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle.
Money from the tax will help fund various improvement projects for the state's public transportation. The tax would extend a surcharge already imposed on the New York City Metro area.
"We consider it discriminatory, and we are opposed," John Barrows, spokesman for the American Car Rental Association, told the news source.
Regional transit officials have also voiced concern, saying that a 5% tax is not enough; they have been lobbying for a 10% increase.
