MILWAUKEE -- Franklyn Gimbel, chairman of the Wisconsin Center District Board, has proposed doubling the county car rental tax -- from 3% to 6% -- to help fund expansion of the Midwest Express Center. But the plan will require special state legislation since current law caps the car rental tax at 4%.
Gimbel told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that he hopes state legislators will consider changing the car rental cap in January.
However, backers of the Midwest Express Center's expansion plan aren't the only ones hoping to attract future monies from a car rental tax hike in Milwaukee. Also competing for funds is a renovation project for the Bradley Center, home to the NBA's Milwaukee Bucks.
Mayor John O. Norquist and County Executive F. Thomas Ament said they will schedule a public meeting in January to address the various downtown development projects competing for public funds.
