Not only does PlatePass — the electronic toll payment system that enables renters and fleet drivers to use high-speed, electronic toll collection (ETC) lanes — make driving more convenient, but it is also good for the environment.

Designed to help rental car customers and fleet drivers use cashless toll lanes without incurring costly violations, PlatePass can also reduce greenhouse gas emissions. According to the company, it enables drivers to bypass slower stop-and-go traffic on non-toll roads and backups at cash toll lanes, eliminating extended idling.

A recent study by the International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association compared the emissions of air pollutants on an all-electronic, cashless toll road to those on a parallel non-toll roadway. According to the findings, using the ETC road reduced overall fuel consumption and vehicle emissions — with reductions in dangerous pollutants ranging from 28% to 56%.

To date, PlatePass has paid nearly 50 million tolls for fleet and rental car drivers on toll roads throughout the country, translating in a reduction of roughly 16 billion grams of carbon dioxide emitted into the air — or the equivalent of approximately 1.8 million gallons of gasoline.

“The convenience of PlatePass and its ability to reduce stop-and-go traffic results in both environmental and quality-of-life benefits,” said Adam Draizin, president of American Traffic Solutions Fleet Services. “PlatePass not only is beneficial for rental and fleet drivers but also has indirect environmental benefits.”
