San Francisco to Offer On-Street Parking Spaces for Car Sharing
Under a two-year experiment approved by the Municipal Transportation Agency, the City of San Francisco will provide as many as 900 on-street parking spaces for car-sharing vehicles.
The City of San Francisco will offer as many as 900 on-street parking spaces for car-sharing vehicles, according to a San Francisco Chronicle report. Approved last week by the Municipal Transportation Agency (MTA), this two-year experiment could start as soon as January.
Since car sharing is growing in popularity, the city wants to make it easier for car-sharing vehicles to find parking, says the report. Under the two-year test, the city will provide as many as 450 spaces for the first year of the program and up to 900 spaces during the second year.
Currently, there are 281,000 on-street parking spaces in San Francisco, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
Because parking spaces are limited in San Francisco, each space that is switched to car-sharing use will involve neighborhood outreach, a public hearing and approval by the MTA board of directors, says the report.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, eligible participants include car-sharing operators such as City CarShare and ZipCar as well as peer-to-peer car-sharing businesses like GetAround, which allows people to rent out their vehicles.
