It’s no easy task keeping track of legislation in the car rental industry, but these three seminars at this year’s Car Rental Show in Las Vegas will help you to take stock of the new regulations in the industry and to stay on top of what’s coming in 2012.

On Monday, March 12 from 4-5 p.m., Leslie Pujo of LaPlaca Law will update attendees on legal challenges and proposed legislation that could impact rental operations this year. There will also be an opportunity for attendees to commemorate Michael LaPlaca and celebrate his service to the auto rental industry. Pujo, a partner at LaPlaca Law, will continue publishing the LaPlaca car rental industry guides.

Following on Tuesday, March 13 from 9:30-10:30 a.m., the American Car Rental Association (ACRA) board of directors and ACRA Executive Director Sharon Faulkner will conduct a panel session on current and pending issues in the industry, such as taxation standardization and policy consensus. The panel will also run as an open forum, giving attendees the chance to voice their opinions to the association.

The panelists for the session are: Bob Barton, U-Save Auto Rental of America Inc.; Frank Colonna, Triangle Rent A Car Inc.; Gil Cygler, Allcar Rent A Car; Robert E. Muhs, Esq., Avis Budget Group Inc.; Gordon Reel, Enterprise Rent A Car; Don Fonte; Hertz and Tom Kelly; Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group.

Later on Tuesday, David E. Purinton of PurCo Fleet Services Inc. will present “Recouping Hidden Losses in Damage Recovery,” from 3:35-4:25 p.m. Find out how you can recover what isn’t listed in your profit-and-loss reports, such as diminution of value, loss of use and administrative costs. This seminar includes tips to dramatically reduce unrecoverable vehicle damage incidents.

Purinton will also walk attendees through a recently decided landmark loss-of-use and administrative fee case, PurCo v. Koenig, and its implications for the auto rental industry. For some background on the case from Auto Rental News, read this article.
