The Tel Aviv Municipality plans to launch a program where users can rent cars from municipal garages around the city and drop them off once they reach their destination, according to a report by Hamodia.

The city wants to develop this carsharing program after having success with a bike rental program. It would cost NIS 60 ($16) per hour to rent the vehicles, according to the report.

This carsharing program is aimed at reducing the number of vehicles coming into Tel Aviv on a daily basis. “The program will enable individuals and families to get around town without having to search for parking, and allow people from outside the city to commute into Tel Aviv by train and still have the convenience of a vehicle to get to their meetings,” Deputy Mayor Meital Lehavi told Hamodia.

A test program is set to launch in the coming months. Tel Aviv has $5.5 million for the purchase of 90 vehicles, the development of a computerized infrastructure to keep track of the vehicles and the development of parking areas, according to the report.
