Chart: Cox Automotive
As another data point to monitor the health of the automotive market, according to Cox Automotive estimates, total used-vehicle sales were down 12% year over year in June. Cox estimates the June used SAAR (Seasonally Adjusted Annual Rate) to be 39 million, down from 43.6 million last June and down compared to 40 in May. It estimates the monthly total used sales volume to be 3.2 million for June.
The used retail SAAR takes it a step further by only looking at used vehicles sold via a dealership (franchised and independent) thus removing private party sales from the calculation. The June used retail SAAR estimate is 21.3 million, down from 23.1 million last year and down month over month from May. Retail used sales volume of 1.7 million is estimated for June down from 1.8 million in May and 1.9 in June 2020.
