The British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA) released a report outlining the effects of terrorism on the car rental industry in the United Kingdom.
The report found that about 15.5 million car rentals are made in the U.K. each year, making terrorist attacks using rental vehicles more common because they are inconspicuous.
The BVRLA reports 14 deaths and 90 injuries as a result of terrorism from March through June 2017. The report also cites the July 2016 attack in Nice, France, which resulted in 86 deaths and 434 injuries.
The organization recommends that U.K. rental companies work with the government to instate a compulsory national accreditation program and counterterrorism training for the rental industry. BVRLA also recommends the development of background checks, new security technology, and information sharing between other countries.
The executive summary of the report can be read here.
