City officials in South Burlington, Vt., are considering adding a 5% tax on rental cars in order to pay for road repairs, the VTDigger reports.
The tax would affect all cars rented at Burlington International Airport and other area car rental offices. The total amount of revenue the tax would generate is still being calculated.
Currently, the state collects a 9% rental car tax. The airport charges a $4 per day facility charge on vehicles rented at the airport.
An airport official told the VTDigger the 5% increase "sounds aggressive."
In order for the tax to be implemented, both city voters and the Vermont Legislature have to approve it.
