Zipcar will launch a two-year carsharing pilot program in Santa Monica, Calif., by the end of the year, according to a report by the Santa Monica Mirror.

The City of Santa Monica approved the contract at last week’s city council meeting.

Santa Monica will provide a minimum of 20 on- and off-street parking spaces for the Zipcar program, according to the report.

“It is anticipated that the pilot public car-share program would begin operation late in 2015, and provide the traditional model of roundtrip car-sharing services,” city staff told the Mirror. “If the program is deemed successful, two additional one-year options for renewal may be exercised at the city’s sole discretion.”

The partnership between Santa Monica and Zipcar comes almost three years after the idea was first officially discussed at city hall, according to the report.
