U-Haul Settles FTC Charges of Price Fixing

The Federal Trade Commission’s complaint alleges that on several occasions between 2006 and 2008, U-Haul tried to increase rates for one-way truck rentals by privately and publicly communicating with Budget. The proposed settlement order against U-Haul and its parent company, AMERCO, bars them from colluding or inviting collusion for 20 years.

Atlanta Airport May Increase Rental Car Charges

Officials at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta have proposed a 50-cent customer facility fee increase to help offset the drop in car rentals. The fee increase is expected to generate $24.5 million annually, and will be used to pay down debt on bonds for the airport’s new car rental facility.

Car Rental Fee May be Used to Lure Airline to S.C.

A 5-percent car rental fee would go toward raising $1.5 million yearly for incentives to attract a discount airline carrier. The fee would work like a tax on the car rental firms, which would be required to pay an amount equal to 5 percent of gross rental charges each month. The fee would apply to any passenger vehicle rented or leased for 90 days or less in Charleston County.

Hawaii Lawmakers Approve Car Rental Fee Increase

The bill will raise daily car rental fees from $1 to $4.50, and raise about $45 million next fiscal year. The money raised will go toward construction of a $230 million rental car facility at Honolulu International Airport and an overflow vehicle storage facility at Kahului airport on Maui.
