As the holiday travel season swings into high gear, Advantage Rent A Car offers winter travel tips and precautions to motorists. With winter conditions arriving early this year, it is recommended that all travelers check weather and road conditions prior to departure. Advantage also advises motorists to carry a current map and when traveling into unfamiliar territory, check for road closures and other hazardous conditions that may require an alternate route.

Various websites offer information on weather and road conditions such as www.accutraffic.com; www.weather.com; www.weatherbug.com; and www.accuweather.com. Weather information and road conditions managed by the US Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration are available online at fhwa.dot.gov/trafficinfo/index.htm or by calling ‘511’, designated as America’s Traveler Information telephone number. Information regarding road closures and road conditions may also be available by contacting State Public Safety and Information Agencies. Preparing for possible weather delays when traveling with children is a must. Advantage recommends packing snacks, water, towelettes, games for the children, and a first-aid kit.

For travelers renting vehicles during this season, Advantage advises they reserve the appropriate vehicle considering weather conditions and terrain. Advantage says planning ahead will avoid problems on travel day – consider what special equipment may be required when making a reservation, such as child safety seats and ski racks (at Advantage, this equipment is available for a daily fee of $5.00 and $9.99 respectively). Advantage and most other car rental companies do not permit the use of snow chains on their vehicles due to liability, however, Advantage does offer a full line of four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive vehicles. They also suggest the traveler inquire about available roadside assistance programs from the car rental company – should an emergency arise when traveling alone or with children, the added protection of this product is invaluable.
