Bill Introduced to Increase Car Rental Fee in Nebraska
The proposal would increase the car rental fee to no more than 5.75% from the current 4.5% rate beginning Oct. 1, if approved.
Legislation was introduced to the Nebraska Legislature on Jan. 16 to change the fee for renting a vehicle in Nebraska.
If approved, the L251 bill would increase the existing car rental fee from 4.5% to no more than 5.75% of each rental car contract, excluding sales tax.
Revenues from the fee would be due Feb. 15 of each year to the respective county the car rental location operates in and are used in the same way as proceeds from the other motor vehicle taxes in the state are allocated and distributed. “The revenue received by the county under this section shall be included and considered as proceeds of motor vehicle taxes and fees for purposes of any growth limitation on budgets of political subdivisions funded by property taxes,” the bill states.
A fee is not charged if the renter is exempt from paying sales tax.
If passed, the bill would become effective Oct. 1.
