OAKLAND, Calif. -- Airport administrators in Oakland have selected Turner Construction Co. as the lead builder for the airport's expansion project, which will include a consolidated rental car facility.
According to project plans, the rental car facility will occupy the first two floors of a seven-level parking garage and customer service building. Public parking will be available on the upper floors. A two-story rental car quick-turnaround area will be located behind the parking structure. The number of tollbooths will increase from six to 18.
Ultimately, a pedestrian bridge will be constructed to connect the garage to the main airport terminal.
Until the project's completion, car rental companies will operate at an interim facility at 7400 Earhart Road.
Turner will provide pre-construction and design management services. The firm is also responsible for hiring and managing subcontractors for the garage's design and construction.
The Board of Port Commissioners oversees Oakland International Airport, which averaged one million passengers per month for calendar year 2002. Last year, Oakland was the 27th largest airport market for car rental revenue.
