California Legislation Calls for Optional Fee to Fund Rental Facilities
If the bill becomes law, the state’s airports could collect a daily fee, but it would not be mandated.
Pending legislation in the California State Senate gives flexibility for the state to collect a daily fee from rental car customers to build consolidated rental facilities, according to the San Fernando Valley Business Journal.
The current law sets a $10 fee for each car rental, but with the change, airports could charge a daily rate. Four airports, including Bob Hope Airport in Burbank and Los Angeles International Airport, back the measure.
The Valley Industry & Commerce Association Aviation Committee in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles also voted to recommend supporting the pending legislation.
The State Senate has already passed a version of the bill, and the State Assembly is still working on the language for its bill. If the bill becomes law, the airports could collect a daily fee, but it would not be mandated. The fee would be charged to rental car customers to fund new facilities that put car rental businesses in one location.
Bob Hope Airport and LAX have projects on the drawing boards to consolidate their respective car rental operations.
