Residents of the Canadian town of Squamish will soon be able to participate in the city's first carsharing program, thanks to a partnership between the District and carsharing co-op Modo, the Vancouver Courier reports.

City officials told the news site that they hope carsharing will encourage families to limit themselves to one or no vehicle. If finalized, the program will see two cars introduced in the downtown area, each with designated parking spots. Vehicles will be added on as the program grows in popularity.

The program’s first two vehicles, most likely a Honda Fit and Rav4 Hybrid, are expected to be introduced in late 2018 or 2019.

During the early stages of the project, residents will have to share vehicles with District employees, who will be able to use the vehicles for short trips.

Modo is active in Vancouver, Victoria, and Nanaimo and boasts close to 20,000 members.
