The Canton Council in Canton, Ga., has voted against Mayor Gene Hobgood’s proposed excise tax on rental cars for the second time, according to a report by the Cherokee Tribune. The council voted 4-2 against the 3% excise tax.

Hobgood says that the tax would be beneficial to the city by raising money for the Canton Main Street program and other city-sponsored agencies, says the report. “I still support it very strongly,” Hobgood told the Cherokee Tribune. “In fact, I’m going to have it on the agenda again for the next meeting for further discussion.”

Councilman Hooky Huffman opposes the tax because Canton only has one car rental location, so it would target only the Enterprise Rent-A-Car location, according to the report.

With an average increase of $1 per day, the rental car tax would mainly affect Canton citizens — the majority of customers at the local Enterprise location, according to Angie Wiggins, area manager of the Canton Enterprise.

“A dollar a day onto a rental?” Hobgood told the Cherokee Tribune. “I can’t imagine there being a lot of kick about that, particularly for the good it’s going to do for economic development.”
