The BVRLA and the RAC Foundation published a new report on the future of car rental titled “Car Rental 2.0: New alternatives to car ownership,” written by Luca Lytton and Toby Poston.

The report said the demand for pay-as-you-go motoring is increasing as motorists are looking for other options to meet their travel requirements. The potential is greater in urban areas where there are more users looking for other modes of transportation.

While the report shows that car rental and car sharing options can reduce car ownership, traffic and emissions, one of the problems the industry faces is a lack of involvement from local authorities and not enough branding on the vehicles.

Another issue is effectively integrating with other modes of transportation including car ownership, taxis, bus and train. Other barriers include technology updates, parking, insurance and damage checking. The report states that digital communication has the potential to create a “mobility mix” in helping motorists find the best options to travel, and thus helping with the issue of integration between modes of transportation.
