Disputed Airport Car Rental Fee Backed by Chula Vista City Council

The San Diego International Airport, the Hertz Corporation, and Enterprise Rent-A-Car filed a lawsuit against the Port of San Diego to challenge a $3.50 per vehicle rental fee.

The Chula Vista (Calif.) City Council unanimously voted yesterday to back the Port of San Diego in a dispute with the San Diego International Airport, the Hertz Corporation, and Enterprise Rent-a-Car, NBC 7 reports.
The San Diego International Airport and rental companies entered a lawsuit against the port to stop a $3.50 rental fee per vehicle meant to fund a $40 million, 1,600-space parking structure.
The Airport Authority is opposing the fee to maintain what it says is its legal right to challenge future fees the Port Authority places on airport transportation vendors. A similar fee was instituted to fund the construction of the San Diego Convention Center parking structure from 1999 to 2006.
The estimated completion time for the parking structure project is 2022, with no delays. The Port Authority says it has alternative plans to fund the project without the rental fees.
