Hertz Plans Car-Sharing Venture
Hertz says it will have leading-edge technology in place to make the program effective. UHaul and Enterprise are also testing the car sharing waters.
Hertz is planning to launch a major push into the car-sharing market later this year, according to the Boston Globe.
Rich Broome, Hertz senior vice president for corporate affairs and communications, said that the company would initially roll out the program in a handful of major US cities.
Broome said that when the program starts, Hertz will have leading-edge technology in place to make the program effective.
This is not the first time Hertz has experimented with car sharing. In 2000, Hertz tried a short-lived program in San Francisco in conjunction with BART, the Bay Area Rapid Transit system.
UHaul and Enterprise have also been testing the car-sharing waters. UHaul launched a pilot program, UCar Share. Cars were initially only available at certain rental centers and during regular business hours. But the company plans to expand the program in the next few weeks. It is currently available in about 10 cities.
Enterprise launched a service called WeCar in St. Louis and is looking to expand the program .
