Hertz is expanding its partnership with Uber to support both autonomous robotaxi operations and driver-led fleet services, as part of its broader push into new mobility offerings.
Hertz said on April 30 that its affiliated company, Oro Mobility, will provide fleet management and operational services for Uber across autonomous vehicles and traditional rideshare fleets.
Oro Mobility, created by Hertz to manage large scale vehicle fleets, will support Uber’s autonomous robotaxi program using Lucid vehicles equipped with Nuro autonomous driving technology.
The services will include charging, maintenance, repairs, cleaning and depot staffing. The companies expect to launch the service in the San Francisco Bay Area later this year, with further growth in 2027.
In addition, Oro will provide driver-led fleet services on the Uber platform using vehicles operated by its own drivers. The model is designed to help meet growing rider demand while maintaining consistent service levels.
Following a pilot in Atlanta, the service is now operating in Los Angeles and San Francisco, with Northern New Jersey expected to launch this spring.
Hertz said the move builds on its long-standing rideshare rental relationship with Uber and reflects its strategy to expand beyond its traditional rental business into more complex fleet operations.
“Hertz has spent over a century managing fleet operations at scale, and Oro extends that expertise into the next phase of mobility,” said Gil West, Hertz CEO, in an April 30 news release. “The partnership with Uber connects demand with scalable fleet management services and supports a range of mobility uses.”
Uber said the partnership will help it grow both autonomous and driver-based services on its platform.
Andrew Macdonald, Uber president and chief operating officer, added in the news release: “Working with Hertz’s fleet management capabilities will help bring autonomous technology to the platform and support a network that includes both driver-led and autonomous rides. The combination allows us to better meet demand and deliver a consistent rider experience.”
Hertz said Oro is designed to manage and service fleets efficiently across a range of mobility segments, combining fleet operations, logistics and vehicle maintenance expertise.
The company said the initiative is part of its broader effort to diversify beyond its core rental operations and position itself to manage increasingly complex fleets, including those that are autonomous or operated by drivers.
