A pilot program for fixed-space and point-to-point carsharing is set to go into effect in the Hollywood area after the Los Angeles City Council approved the program, 13-0.

According to Patch.com, the original motion to create the program was introduced in 2013 by then- District Four Councilman, Tom LaBonge.

Fixed-space car sharing allows users to pick up and return the vehicle at a designated parking spot in a certain area, while point-to-point allows for pick up and return in any legal parking spot, with parking meters prepaid by the carsharing service.

Vehicles will be available to reserve online and through a mobile app.

"I think it's important that we look at all methods to be more mobile," LaBonge told City News Service. "The most frustrating thing I've heard from Angelenos about the city is traffic and traffic impact, and if it helps the flow and mobility of Angelenos, it's a good thing. So I thank the mayor and the council for their continued leadership here."

The City Council’s vote requires the Department of Transportation to manage the project and report back in 180 days on the status of the pilot.

The pilot program is awaiting final approval and signature of Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti.
