N.Y. Senate Looking to Increase Car Rental Tax
If signed into law, a new bill, which aims to save the New York public transportation system, the cost of car rental taxes in New York will be 19 percent.
In an attempt to save the New York public transportation system, the New York Senate plans to introduce a bill that would increase car rental tax by 5 percent, according to WNYC.org. In order to balance his budget, Governor Patterson has already added on an extra percentage point to the car rental tax.
If the bill is signed into law, it would cost 19 percent in taxes, which would be the fifth largest in the nation. The Senate says the increase would bring in $35 million to help prevent a fare increase in public transportation and service cuts.
Officials in the car rental industry say that if the bill is passed, not only will visitors be affected, but local residents who use rental cars for weekend getaways and their transportation needs will feel the burn as well.
The Senate plans to officially introduce the bill the week of April 27.
