New York City is extending its cap on the number of ride-hailing vehicles allowed to operate in the city, NY1 reports.

Mayor Bill de Blasio also announced a fee waiver for yellow cab drivers. Both the ride-hailing cap extension and fee waiver are meant to help taxi drivers, many of whom say they are struggling to stay competitive.

In August, the New York City Council voted to temporarily suspend issuing new ride-hailing permits for 12 months, as part of an effort by lawmakers to have more regulatory control over e-commerce company. The law also set a minimum pay rate for ride-hailing drivers.

De Blasio had previously said that he supported extending the cap past its initial 12-month mark.
