New York City plans to provide dedicated parking spaces both on-street and in city-owned lots for carsharing companies, according to a report by the New York Post.

New York City’s Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg told a city council meeting that her agency will launch a two-year pilot program this spring. The program will provide carsharing companies with 300 parking spots at city-owned parking facilities and 300 curbside spots on local streets, says the report.

“I know that some are skeptical of shifting on-street parking to car-share spaces — I will admit that I was to,” said Trottenberg. “But after seeing the numbers on reduced car ownership and lessening demand on our curb space, I believe carshare could be a good use of public space that will benefit everyone.”

Most of the city-owned parking facilities are in Manhattan but Trottenberg expects all five boroughs to get the parking spaces, according to the report.
