San Mateo County Supervisors Expected to Add Car Rental Tax to Ballot

The car rental tax would be one of three taxes added to the county’s June 5 election ballot; the other two would increase a hotel tax and start a new tax on commercial parking businesses.

According to San Mateo’s The Daily Journal, the county’s board of supervisors unanimously favored adding three tax measures to San Mateo’s June 5 election. The board is expected to approve adding the measures to the ballot by the Feb. 28 deadline.

The tax, according to meeting documents, would impose a business license tax on car rental operators in the county at a rate of 2.5% of gross receipts. The Daily Journal reports that this would generate approximately $7.75 million annually in general fund revenue for the county.

If the other two taxes also make it ballot, the hotel tax would increase to 12% from 10%, and commercial parking businesses would be taxed at a rate of 8% of gross receipts.

According to the The Daily Journal, the board attempted to pass similar taxes on the rental car industry and commercial parking businesses in 2008, but both failed with about 52% of voters opposing. The board said the 2008 failure was due to a lack of campaigning for the two new taxes.

The county is reportedly planning on spending $280,000 to place the three measures on the ballot this year.
