AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas Governor Rick Perry last week signed a bill clearing the way for a public vote on proposed car rental and hotel taxes to help fund a new stadium for the Dallas Cowboys.
A proposed 6% car rental tax and 3% hotel tax for Dallas County will likely be placed on the November 2004 ballot.
Some RACs plan to mount a campaign against the tax. A key campaign goal is to educate voters that locals, not just visitors, will be subject to the rental tax.
"As an industry, we've got to work at changing the perception that the only people who rent cars are from out of town," said Scott Yaguchi, general manager and vice president for Enterprise Rent-A-Car in Dallas. "If we don't get the message out, they will come back again and again and again. And at some point, these [cumulative taxes] do affect demand."
The city of Dallas already has a 5% car rental tax to help fund construction of American Airlines Center, where the Mavericks and Stars play.
