ARLINGTON, Texas –- Arlington voters on Nov. 2 approved a tax package, which includes a 5% car rental tax, to help finance a new 75,000-seat stadium for the Dallas Cowboys. The stadium tax plan drew 55% of the vote.
Arlington, located halfway between Dallas and Ft. Worth, will become home to the Cowboys after the team's lease at Texas Stadium expires in 2008. Texas Stadium is in Irving.
Arlington's share of the financing is capped at $325 million. The Dallas Cowboys set their sights on Arlington as a future stadium site after the team's negotiations collapsed with the city and county of Dallas.
Local car rental operators opposed the stadium tax.
