Through a new partnership with Sixt, Lyft is continuing to create a personal transportation ecosystem with access to bikes, scooters, rideshare, transit, and car rentals.

Starting this month, Lyft riders in Seattle, Las Vegas, and Miami will be able to rent a Sixt car through the Lyft app. Following this launch, Sixt and Lyft plan to expand to all cities within the Sixt rental network in the U.S. in the coming months.

“We have reimagined what renting a car should look like, solving for common pain points like long wait times at the rental counter, uncertainty on which car renters will leave with, and stress getting home after returning,” Lyft said in a press release.

“We’ve tackled these head-on by eliminating lengthy paperwork, contact reduced and expedited pickup and dropoff, allowing renters to select the exact car they’ll leave with, and by providing Lyft credit to get home after the rental is complete.”

Vehicles rented through the Sixt partnership will be domiciled at Sixt rental locations.

When Lyft customers open the Lyft app, they can choose from a selection of Sixt cars from the Rentals tab, from which renters can select vehicle class, reservation dates, location, and ancillary services.

The new functionality goes further to allow the renter to select the exact make and model of vehicle within 30 minutes prior to pickup. Renters are also afforded a $10 Lyft credit after the car is dropped at the Sixt rental lot.

Later renters will be able to rent through the Lyft Rentals website.

“Partnering with Sixt enables us to rapidly expand the reach of our rentals in a time when customers are looking for hassle-free and intuitive transportation solutions,” said Cal Lankton, Lyft’s VP Fleet & Global Operations.

Sixt and Lyft have partnered since 2019, with U.S. Sixt customers able to use Lyft's services through the Sixt app. “We are now very excited to expand this cooperation by the integration of our rental products into the Lyft app starting in August,” said Sebastian Birkel, president, Sixt U.S.

Lyft Rentals — which launched in 2019 in Oakland, San Francisco and Los Angeles, will continue — though the service shuttered in March to deal with the onset of the coronavirus pandemic.

Lyft has since implemented new safety protocols in all of its open-air rental lots, which includes contactless pickups and returns, enhanced cleaning protocols, and free disinfectant for renters.

Sixt has similarly introduced additional measures, including increased hygiene protocols for employees, social distancing inside rental branches, and a multi-step cleaning and disinfectant process.
