Paid for by rental car customer user fees, John Glenn Columbus International Airport will open a new rental car facility in 2020.
Turner Construction Company has been awarded the nearly $106 million contract to build the facility on 10 acres near the center of airport property.
Levels one and two of new parking garage, which currently house rental car operations, will become available to serve the demand for public garage parking.
“Our valued rental car customers and the businesses serving them will benefit from a modern facility dedicated to their unique needs, while other travelers will benefit from the additional parking capacity it will create in the garage,” said Elaine Roberts, president and CEO of the Columbus Regional Airport Authority.
To be constructed in 2018 and 2019 near the site of a future terminal, the rental car facility will allow travelers to drop off and pick up rental cars from a centralized location. When the new terminal opens, a sky bridge will connect the two facilities. Until then, rental car customers will be bussed to and from the current terminal.
The new rental car facility, which is being designed by TranSystems, will consist of a ready/return area for pick-up and drop-off of rental cars, a quick turn-around area where the rental car companies will fuel and clean the vehicles between rentals, and a customer service area for renting and returning vehicles.
