Investigators believe that a fire at Nantucket Airport, which destroyed five vehicles rented to President Joe Biden’s secret service team, may have started in an SUV that was subject to a safety recall, according to a report by the Nantucket Current.

The blaze at Nantucket Airport started less than 24 hours after Biden’s secret service team returned the rental vehicles to Hertz, says the report. On Monday morning, the fire shut down the airport briefly after it spread within 40 feet of the airport’s jet fuel tanks.

No one was injured, and an investigation has determined that the blaze wasn’t suspicious, according to Nantucket Fire Chief Michael Cranson.

While the official cause is still under investigation, officials are looking at a Ford Expedition SUV as the source of the fire, according to the report. The vehicle was under a safety recall by Ford due to a faulty battery junction box that has caused other fires. The Expedition had been scheduled for service for the recall, but it hadn’t been repaired.

The five vehicles had been rented to secret service agents who were providing security for President Biden and his family during their annual Thanksgiving visit to Nantucket.

The Nantucket Airport said that it’s “currently coordinating with rental car agencies and agency partners to ensure scene safety.”
