BMW is looking to expand its Munich-based car sharing program to cities throughout Europe, according to eRentals.co.uk.

BMW has supplied 300 vehicles for the program, which is a partnership between BMW and car rental firm Sixt. The vehicles are positioned in locations throughout Munich, and Sixt handles logistics and the customer database.

The vehicles are tracked using satellite technology, and a refueling team makes sure that the cars have full tanks of fuel.

Members of the program receive keyless access to the vehicles, which they can locate with a Smartphone application. After the driver types in a PIN, the car is activated and the driver can drive it for a per-minute fee. All charges go to the customer's credit card.

BMW has also discussed making the service available to customers in other major European cities including Manchester, Birmingham, and London.

The automaker will also invest in UK-based website that allows drivers to find homeowners who have registered their private parking spaces, garages, and driveways as places where motorists can securely drop off their vehicles for a fee. The site is ParkatmyHouse.com.

BMW is also looking to invest in mobility services such as My City Way, a New York based program that uses traffic cameras for drivers to work out the ideal route around the city.
