Car rental companies are quickly turning their attention to the market in India, as the markets in the U.S. and Europe are slowing due to advances in public transportation according to The Economic Times of India.

However, public transportation in India is still not as good as it should be. With the Commonwealth Games scheduled in India in 2010, there should be a high demand for rental cars.

Some rental car companies are already established in the country, such as Hertz, Europcar, Leaseplan and Avis, but the competition will soon grow as companies such as Budget, Thrifty, Dollar, Alamo and National are looking to break into the Indian car rental market, primarily through the franchisee model.

The industry has seen a growth of 35 to 50 percent in the last two years.
