The St. Louis Cardinals MLB organization rented 41 cars to drive themselves to Chicago last Friday to play a Saturday doubleheader against the White Sox.

When Enterprise Holdings executives inked the deal for its National Car Rental brand to sponsor the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team, they couldn’t have imagined this scenario: The cars were rented to provide Cardinals players and staff one more day of isolation to mitigate the potential spread of the coronavirus.

The Cardinals had been beset by a coronavirus outbreak, with 18 players and staffers testing positive for COVID-19. The Saturday games were the team’s first in 17 days as part of a mandatory quarantine.

According to news reports and Twitter accounts, a convoy of rental cars, some with “Cards” written with grease paint markers on the windows, made its way up Interstate 55.

Before the weekend, the Cardinals had only played five games in this shortened season, where other teams had played as many as 21. As such, the Cardinals will try to play 53 games in 45 days.

If they need more rentals, they know where to get them. Extraordinary times indeed.
