Virtuo, an on-demand carsharing service, has won an award in the “Smart Cities & Mobility” category at the inaugural G20 Innovation League event, which took place in Sorrento, Italy.

This new international event was organized by the Italian presidency of the G20, ahead of the meeting of trade ministers. One-hundred startups from G20 countries and more than 100 venture capital funds and corporations participated and discussed five global challenges, including Cleantech, the potential and risks of artificial intelligence, the effective use of the Internet of Things (IoT & Wearables), building smart cities, and the future of health care.

Venture capital funds awarded 10 startups, or two startup companies per challenge. The selection criteria included challenge fit, offering, international reach, and team. The winners of the "Smart Cities & Mobility" category were Virtuo and Dott Scooters.

Founded in France, Virtuo currently operates in four countries (France, Italy, Spain, and the U.K.) and 20 cities.

"We are proud to have won the ‘Smart Cities & Mobility’ category,” said Karim Kaddoura, co-founder and co-CEO of Virtuo. “At Virtuo, we are convinced that the personal car has no place in big cities anymore. Our on-demand car solution allows city dwellers to enjoy the freedom that a car offers, without the cost, pollution, and public space constraints of a private car."
