In an article by The National, a car rental customer found out after bring fined that the rental car he was driving was uninsured and had expired registration. The car was also impounded.

Police said that they have been cracking down on illegal car rental operations since 2008, but that potential renters have to help in curbing the problem. They recommend that potential car renters check online to see if the vehicle is registered; however, sometimes the auto rental company shows a fake copy of the registration and claims there is third-party insurance, the police said.

In the case involving the renter that was recently fined, the police said that the case could have been much worse had the renter been involved in an accident.
