Google plans to purchase a total of 30 electric vehicles for its "Gfleet" corporate car-sharing program for employees. The company is purchasing Chevrolet Volts and Nissan LEAFs for the Gfleet and plans to add EVs from other automakers as they become available. Shown above is a video from the company's blog that was posted (appropriately) on YouTube.

As part of this effort, the company is expanding its electric vehicle charging infrastructure with the addition of 71 new, faster Level 2 chargers to the existing 150 Level 1 chargers Google has installed over the last few years. The company said its goal is to electrify 5 percent of its parking spaces across its "Googleplex" campus based in Mountain View, Calif.

The company also operates a number of biodiesel shuttles on its campus, which it said saved net annual of more than 5,400 tons of CO2. "That's like taking over 2,000 cars off the road, or avoiding 14 million vehicle miles every year!" said Rolf Schreiber, Technical Program Manager, Electric Transportation for Google on the company's blog. "But we're only one company, so we hope other companies think about how they can incorporate these new technologies into their own infrastructure. By supporting new, green transportation technologies, we're enabling our employees to be green and doing our part to help spur growth in the industry."
