Both the Hertz Corp. and Avis Rent A Car System have announced plans to begin offering Wi-Fi connectivity at a number of major airport locations early next year. As a result, customers with laptops and PDAs will be able to access a high-speed Internet connection to check e-mails and send messages.
Hertz said it plans to introduce wireless high-speed Internet access in more than 50 major airport locations nationwide. The company has reached a preliminary agreement with Texas-based Wayport, a provider of wireless high-speed Internet services.
Hertz locations set to receive the service include major airports in California, Florida, Texas, New York, Illinois and Pennsylvania.
Avis will be offering its WiFi service through SBC Communications. The service will be available in up to 88 Avis locations in major U.S. airports.
In both cases, the WiFi service will be available to regular monthly subscribers as well as to rental customers who pay a one-time use fee.
"For travelers needing quick information on their way to a destination, or before boarding a plane, this Wi-Fi capability at our airport locations will be a very attractive amenity," said Mike Caron, vice president of product development for Cendant Car Rental Group, parent company of Avis.
