Hertz On Demand, a program that provides vehicles to renters at an hourly rate, announced the expansion of its university program to Oklahoma State University, according to a Sept. 26 press release. The company is introducing a small fleet that runs entirely on compressed natural gas (CNG) by offering students, faculty, staff and the neighboring community access to two Honda Civic GX sedans.

These two CNG vehicles will be the first Hertz CNGs in the U.S. as Hertz has already introduced these alt-fuel vehicles in Italy and the U.K. With eventual plans to expand its use of CNGs in the U.S., Hertz does use CNG airport buses at Los Angeles International Airport and hopes to build a fueling station there.

“Personal use of natural gas vehicles is rapidly growing,” says Mark P. Frissora, chairman and CEO of Hertz Corporation. “From energy-efficient vehicles to those that use alternative fuel sources, we are committed to providing a full spectrum of vehicle options across our fleet, and with CNG vehicles that are entirely clean and abundant, we are able to do that.

As of this fall, Hertz On Demand will have a presence on more than 60 university campuses across the U.S., providing an alternative to car ownership for college students. The service operates on an hourly basis.
