According to Hotwire.com in its monthly Travel Savings Indicator, Honolulu car rental prices for September 2011 are at an average of $26 per day — a 53 percent decrease compared to September 2010. This is the largest drop among North American cities, according to the Sept. 20 report, which looks at the top five cities that experienced the largest drops year-over-year.

The other four cities are as follows:
#2 Washington, DC - 53% drop at $31 average daily rental price on Hotwire.com
#3 Las Vegas, NV - 52% drop at $25
#4 Arlington, VA - 49% drop at $26
#5 Tucson, AZ - 42% drop at $23

Honolulu took the No. 1 spot in September 2010 as well as last month.

Here are August’s year-over-year rankings for 2011:
#1 Honolulu, HI - 57% drop at $30 average daily rental price on Hotwire.com
#2 Washington, DC - 54% drop at $31
#3 San Antonio, TX - 50% drop at $22
#4 Las Vegas, NV - 49% drop at $27
#5 Atlanta, GA - 41% drop at $26

Hotels
Dropping from first place in August, Santa Fe, N.M., rounds out the top five with a five percent decrease. The news of the fires that hit a couple months ago continues to have an effect on demand in the area and hotels are now dropping rates even further to keep rooms filled.

Rochester, N.Y. took the top spot with a 13 percent drop at a Hotwire.com average of $81 per night.

Air
This month, several alternative air hubs to major destinations make the list. Coming in at first place with an 8 percent decrease is Arizona's second largest city, Tucson. Three cities are tied for second place this month with a 4 percent decrease each, including Burbank, Calif., Oakland, Calif., and Hawaii's Big Island, which appeared on the August list as well.
