HTA, Travelocity Introduce TravelPass Toll Tag for Online Car Renters
Similar to Netflix, the TravelPass program delivers electronic toll tags by mail, and the customer will send the tag back at the end of his/her trip.
Highway Toll Administration LLC (HTA), the electronic-toll-payment service provider, has introduced the TravelPass mail-order program that provides electronic-tolling devices, or tags, to travelers who book car rentals through Travelocity, a top online provider of consumer-direct travel services and the first to offer the program.
According to HTA President and CEO David Centner, users of the TravelPass program, which is similar to Netflix, in which DVDs are delivered and returned by mail, simply request “Add a Toll Device” when booking a car rental through Travelocity. The electronic toll tag, also called a transponder, will be sent to the customer by first class mail. At the end of the trip, the customer will send the transponder back to HTA in a postage-paid return envelope provided by the company.
Customers will be charged a $1.99 per day fee, plus the cost of all tolls incurred.
Centner noted that the TravelPass toll tag is initially being accepted in the Northeast and Midwest. These areas, he said, have the highest concentration of toll roads in the country, and the TravelPass option applies to all agencies that rent vehicles through Travelocity.
