Greater Binghamton, N.Y.-area rental car agencies report higher than usual demand for rental cars after heavy rains that hit New England in late June, according to the Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin.

Flood victims in the area did not or could not move their vehicles in time to avoid water damange, insurance agents in the region have said, forcing residents to turn to Enterprise, Hertz and other companies for temporary transportation and resulting in a limited supply at area stores, the Press & Sun-Bulletin reports.

Because summer is a busy time for Enterprise, with demand compounded by the flood, the company has brought additional vehicles to it’s Vestal, N.Y., office from other nearby locations, bringing the office’s inventory up about 50 percent.

"We'll continue to work with other locations and try to get the supply where it needs to go," Martini said. Hertz in Binghamton also had experienced a "moderate increase" in demand immediately after the flood, company representative Rich Broome said.

"We lost some normal business rentals, people who didn't come into the city, but that was more than made up for by flood-related rentals to folks who lost their cars or had had them damaged," Broome said. Workers who came to the Binghamton area to aid in flood relief efforts also added to the demand for Hertz rental cars, he said.
