LOS ANGELES –- The Los Angeles City Council yesterday tentatively approved a multi-billion-dollar airport modernization plan, which calls for a new consolidated rental car facility serving LAX. The overall project has been the subject of public debate and study for a decade.
By a vote of 12 to three, council members opted to override project objections from Los Angeles County and the cities of El Segundo and Culver City. The Council will take a final vote on the matter in December, after a 45-day period in which county officials can respond to the Council's vote. Also, the airport project still needs approval by federal aviation authorities. Court challenges are expected as well.
