Nissan North America is recalling 79,853 2013-2014 model-year Pathfinders because the brake light switches in these SUVs may have been installed incorrectly.

As a result of the faulty installation, the relay can remain in the “on” position and the brake lights can remain illuminated even when the brakes aren’t applied, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported.

Additionally, the brake light switch may interfere with the brake-shift interlock, allowing the driver to exit the vehicle without the transmission in the “park” position.

The recall covers Pathfinders manufactured from June 20, 2012, to June 13, 2013.

“If the brake lights remain illuminated, other drivers may fail to stop when the vehicle actually brakes, increasing the risk of a crash,” NHTSA said on its website.

Nissan dealers will inspect the brake light switch and, if needed, replace the relay. There will be no charge for this service.

The recall is expected to begin on July 25. Vehicle owners can reach Nissan customer service at (800) 647-7261.
